Pink Floyd’s ambitious “Pulse” concert film returns Feb. 18, in a double-Blu-ray set packed with extras. And that famous blinking red light.
The October 1994 concert in London featured a complete retelling of “The Dark Side of the Moon,” but was part of the psychedelic group’s “Division Bell” tour. The band were David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright, with backing singers and players.
The “restored and re-edited” version of the 1995 film was first prepared for the “Later Years” box set of three years ago. This is the restored version’s first standalone release. The original concert film was released to laserdisc and VHS. The DVD debuted in 2006.
Meanwhile, Pink Floyd have released to streaming services a dozen unreleased concert albums. The concerts occurred in the early 1970s and the releases are most likely part of a copyright dump to retain rights. No telling how long they will remain online.
The new “Pulse” set (via Sony Music) comes in two versions: a double Blu-ray set and a DVD set. The second discs feature tour screen films, music videos, rehearsals and interviews. Audio on the Blu-rays is dts Master Audio 48/16 and stereo PCM 48/24.
The famous flashing red light of the original CD packaging returns, powered by two replaceable batteries so it will not die, as did most of the original gadgets.
“It’s an idea of (artist) Storm Thorgerson’s which related to ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ and the pulse, and it’s a live album, so the box is ‘alive,’ ” drummer Mason has said.
The packaging artwork also has been reimagined.
Key tracks other than “Dark Side” include “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” “Another Brick in the Wall, Part II” and “Wish You Were Here” and “One of These Days.” Bonus audio includes a revival of “Astronomy Domine” live in Miami.
“The Division Bell” was the second Pink Floyd album recorded without founding member Roger Waters.
The record-setting “Division Bell” tour turned out to be Pink Floyd’s last. It grossed about $250 million. The band did play live one more time, though, reuniting with Waters at Live 8 in 2005.
