Pink Floyd’s post-Roger Waters period will be celebrated, in full, in a 16-disc collection.
“The Later Years” takes a completist approach, folding in the three studio albums (some content “updated, remixed”), two live albums (remixed) as well as concert video and gobs of unreleased material. The years are 1987 through 2014, when David Gilmour led the veteran psychedelic band.
The set is billed as containing six hours of unreleased audio and seven hours of unseen audiovisuals. It follows up on the similar 33-disc box set “The Early Years: 1965-1972,” released in the summer of 2016.
The box set debuts Nov. 29, in time for holiday gift-giving, and goes for about $450. Presales are under way. Look for five CDs, six Blu-rays and five DVDs. As with previous Pink Floyd archival projects, some of the audio debuts in surround/stereo high-res. DVDs repeat the content found on the Blu-rays.
The studio albums are “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” (1987), “The Division Bell” (1994) and the finale, “The Endless River” (2014).
“Reason” has been reworked by Gilmour to change up some of the late Richard Wright’s keyboard parts. Nick Mason recorded some new drum tracks. The stated intent was to “restore the creative balance” between the remaining group members.
“The Endless River” is accompanied by an hourlong film by psychedelic animator Ian Emes.
The 1995 concert film “Pulse” debuts on Blu-ray, “restored and re-edited.” Another live film, 1989’s “Delicate Sound of Thunder,” has been expanded, restored and remixed, and comes with 5.1 sound on Blu-ray. The box set includes the 1989 Venice concert and the seven-track 1990 set from Knebworth (both DVD and Blu-ray).
Two 7-inch singles feature the classic Pink Floyd track “Arnold Layne” (live from 2007) and a rehearsal version of “Lost for Words.” Also find Pink Floyd’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction performance with Billy Corgan.
Also included in the massive box set are unreleased studio tracks, a 60-page book, music videos, documentary footage, tour screen films, promo clips, tour artwork, posters, concert screen films, etc.
For punters seeking a less-costly experience, look for a double-LP and one CD highlights package.
